What to expect from parent work

Parenting can be satisfying and fulfilling. But it can also be difficult and challenging at times. New parents, overwhelmed parents and parents facing multiple issues may benefit from accessing our parenting work service. This can be done with individuals, couples or with other family carers e.g. grandparents. We recognise the importance of well-being for parents/carers and the positive impact this has on the well-being of their children.

Our approach

We give parents/carers an opportunity to speak about the challenges you face and offer new learning about being in relationship with your child(ren). You’ll gain new understanding about your child’s development and needs as well as how you can best support your child(ren) whilst also taking care of yourself. As a parent/carer you’ll have a chance to develop new skills that will help improve all your relationships, but particularly those between you and your child(ren).

As well as helping parents/carers develop your awareness and new skills, we also offer what’s called filial therapy. This is based on play therapy ideas and techniques and encourages communication between parent and child through play. It can help strengthen parent-child relationships. During this process of filial work, parents/carers are always supported by a qualified play therapist.

Feedback

We’re always looking at how we can improve our service and will invite you to feedback on your experience of parent work. With your permission, and your child’s name and situation anonymised so they can’t be identified, we may want to use this feedback to tell others about Platform for Life.
